Demand stronger action on ammonia to protect precious habitats

Did you know over 98% of our protected habitats are negatively impacted by high ammonia emissions?

High ammonia levels threaten not just biodiversity but our health too. The Northern Ireland government is currently consulting on a strategy to address the ammonia crisisThe proposed strategy is flawed and unlikely to achieve the necessary reductions. Our concerns with it include:

  • It relies on voluntary measures too much.
  • It excludes major sources of ammonia, like beef and dairy production.
  • The effectiveness of proposed measures isn’t backed by evidence.
  • Any impact on either ammonia reduction or habitat improvement is unlikely.
  • A strategic environmental assessment is missing, putting the legality of the strategy in question.

We need your support to urge the government to adopt effective ammonia-reduction measures. For our health, sustainable farming and the protection of habitats.

Add your name to our open letter now, before the government consultation on the strategy closes on 23 May.
