Community action stopped the climate-wrecking Whitehaven coal mine. Now, its backers are suing the government in a secret corporate court – and UK taxpayers could pay millions.
Polluters should never be able to stand in the way of a cleaner future. But these courts (known as ISDS courts) let them sue governments for taking action on climate breakdown – all behind closed doors.
The Whitehaven case is a warning. As long as these courts exist, companies can threaten climate action everywhere, leaving taxpayers footing the bill. We don’t have to accept this – the UK can leave this unfair system behind.
Tell the government to defend our democracy, protect our money, and safeguard our climate by bringing secret corporate courts to an end.
